4/9 Article Responses: American Dream

After reading “A Generation Hobbled by the Soaring Cost of College” by Martin and Lehren, it made me realize more that I made a good decision to start attending Foothill College first before transferring to a 4 year university. Because attending Foothill would help me saved up more money and not borrow any loans. I could totally relate to the stories within this article because during my senior year in high school, I applied to many universities and got accepted. I was super happy because I was motivated that I could fit in to those schools and finish my degree there. However looking at the financial aid information they send me, it shown that both me and my parents have to take loans in order to pay for just 1 year in a university. In the article, it said “It sounded like a good fit […] and the school really sold it.” It was describing the university at first but when it comes down to the cost of attendance in the university, it would really make you feel bad because you can’t attend due to you own financial crisis. Although cost of attendance in university is rising and that makes it really scary for me, I think it was good that I started off doing classes in community college and save money.  Since I plan on transferring, I would probably still take out loans to pay for school but it would be probably less than many other people because I attended Foothill first.  This article also mentions that the rising tuition and loans are stopping many people from moving upward mobility such as from poor to middle class, which is showing that you can barely achieve American Dream because you have problems paying of your loans and tuition.

While reading “Millennials Didn’t Abandon Our Institutions – Our Institutions Failed Them” by Holland, What I think it’s trying to say about American Dream is that millennials have different view of American Dream. Before, it was about getting house, moving from poor to middle class, achieving higher education and having family. But today there is more to that millennials also included American Dream could be achieve rights such as rights related to LGBT communities, freedom and etc. That’s all because we are more open stuff.   Also since millennials have different view of American Dream, it conflicts with the more traditional American Dream, which its making them look like that they are the ones who are abandoning our institutions. I think it’s just that the institutions are not willing to accept their point of views.
