Despair
This image of an altered American flag depicts our country's widespread greed as well as its corporate influence. Today, many individuals in important decision making positions are possessed with this greed, compelling them to serve themselves before their people. Instead of the fifty white stars representing the American people, the flag above is adorned with the icons of renown businesses such as Apple and McDonald's. This denotes the weakening democracy, the foundation upon which our country was built. With the lack of democracy, there has been a decrease in patriotism and trust in the government, especially with the younger generations.
Hope
This photograph demonstrates the power we the people have when we come together to support a common interest. The Occupy Movement stands as a symbol for the voice of the American people. When we put our differences aside and become united through our similarities and goals, we become a powerful force that cannot be ignored. Our strength comes with numbers, with each individual's unique qualities and ideas adding to our overall success. Although the movement has lost its momentum, the voice of the people still lingers, echoing throughout history.
I think that image of despair is very powerful as I also believe that corporations are running our country. These companies are becoming more and more involved in our daily lives as opposed to being just products that we buy. Apple for example has a partnership with Volvo to install the Mac operating system in the vehicle. Despite this not being such a bad thing to begin with, I think it's important to keep certain things separate. The car is just a first step. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Molly that our world has become very materialistic and it reflects our society in a negative way. All we seem to care about are material goods and the amount we spend and consume everyday. The millennial generation is less trusting of the government because our world is becoming more and more greedy and everyone's main focus is to make more money no matter how many people they have to walk over.
ReplyDeleteI like the picture of Hope molly chose because it shows that we can come back from the situation we are in. If we all stand up for what we believe, we can reverse this need for material wealth and regain trust in the government and our democracy.
