"Response to Two Articles: How They Relate to My Life"

The first article "A Generation Hobbled by the Soaring Cost of College" by Andrew Martin and Andrew W. Lehren focuses on how increases in college cost have caused so many negative consequences. I can obviously relate to this topic because as a college student I have noticed how expensive it can be. It's hard to imagine how expensive a for-profit college could be since I attend a community college. I also can't really relate to how someone feels when taking out a loan. After reading this I can really understand how awful it must be. I really appreciate how the authors are sort of warning the public about how bad the cost of a higher education will get if this continues. The authors support this opinion by stating that by the year "2016, the average cost of a public college will have more than doubled in just 15 years"(3). This warning really has influenced my views on how this problem can get even worse than how it is now. When reading this article by far the thing that most caught my attention was when Evan Frank talks about his experience with a high school counselor, on page seven. He mentions that his high school counselor encouraged him to go to a school that he on his own couldn't afford without going into a huge amount of dept. One of my high school counselors also pressured me into going to a UC or CSU and never even helped me find other options like a community college. Overall I really enjoyed reading this article and moved on the second.
The second article "Millennials Didn't Abandon Our Institutions - Our Institutions Failed Them" by Joshua Holland was about the Millennial generation or those born between 1980 and 2000. This definitely connects to my life because I am 19 so i am part of the Millennial generation. the article mentions many things that I have witnessed and they seem to be true. These characteristics that many Millennials seem to portray are not always looked upon as a positive thing. Holland states that Millennials are" increasingly alienated from the major institutions of American society."(1). Many other qualities are mentioned but the author instead of blaming the whole generation give thoughtful causes for why this is. This article like the first one was very interesting. both can relate to my life and experiences.
